volume 1 – Mikayla Edwards – photographer, illustrator
girls girls girls is going to be an ongoing interview series, where I get my favourite female creatives, currently doing their thing, to answer the same overly simple twelve questions. Bloggers, writers, artists, photographers, performance makers, musicians – the aim is to get a diverse collection of all levels of experience and field, and show off a little of their work at the same time.
If you’d like to be a part of it, or know someone that could get on board, send me an email using the contact form on this blog! Otherwise, if you see or read something that you connect with, I urge you to get a hold of the talented lady herself. Making it in the creative world is hella tricky, so if you like it, say something!
- What do you do?
I take photos and illustrate.
- What’s something that inspired you to do what you’re doing now?
The thought of what I’m doing being something that could potentially inspire others.
- What’s something that has inspired you recently?
Watching a dear friend of mine follow her dreams without fear.
- If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
- Where did you grow up and what was it like?
I grew up tucked away in a barn shaped house my dad built, near the bottom of the hill that ends at the shore of Matauri Bay. We spent our days recreating the Bridge to Terabithia, munching hot chips and boogie boarding. Our beach was separated into the locals and the tourists, the Maoris and the Pakehas, my sun-dyed blonde hair would’ve been tossed to the tourist end if my family’s heritage wasn’t so widely known.
- Who do you look up to, and why?
As cliche as it is, I look up to my mum and dad. My mum for having the backs of those she loves, she loves so passionately. I hope everyone gets to experience love like hers someday.
I’m fumbling around with how to put how much I look up to my dad into words, he shows me how to be courageous and always stick to my word. He’s the best man I know.
- What are you listening to lately?
Khalid’s American Teen has been on replay since it released. (same)
- When, where or how are you happiest?
When doing what I love the most, surrounded by those I love. That could be in Seattle taking photos, or in my room journaling.
- Why do you do what you do?
I’m new to doing what I do, but I’ve finally realised that I owe it to myself to peruse my passions.
10. What makes it hard?
The thought of failure.
11. What makes it easy?
The dumb ass smile I can’t get off my face when I’m creating!
12. Where can we find you?
Nowhere currently, but watch this space.
